This rare Phoenician silver armlet is crafted from a single strand of twisted silver wire, shaped into a series of wavy undulations. The armlet is decorated with coiled wire at both ends, a hallmark of Phoenician metalworking from the 8th to 5th century BCE. These decorative coils add structural strength and visual interest, creating a piece that is both functional and symbolic. The armlet’s wavy form suggests that it was designed to fit comfortably around the arm, with the natural flexibility of the silver allowing for a snug yet adjustable fit.
The armlet’s simple, organic design is characteristic of Phoenician jewelry, which combined geometric precision with natural, flowing forms. The oxidized patina on the surface adds depth and texture, reinforcing its authenticity as an ancient piece. In Phoenician culture, such jewelry was often used by individuals of high status, both as personal adornment and as a ritual or amuletic item, believed to offer spiritual protection. The armlet’s design, combining silver’s purity and malleability, was often used for adornments that symbolized both earthly wealth and divine favor. Medium: Silver Dimensions: Diameter: 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm) Condition: Very Good. The armlet remains intact with no signs of damage, retaining its original wavy form and coiled decorations. The natural oxidized patina on the surface adds historical authenticity. Provenance: Private Virginia collection, acquired from the trade in the early 2000s.
